Absolute Write’s October Prompt

This month’s prompt: Some Things Dark and Dangerous

Choose a word from this list of Lovecraftian words or this list of obscure words (or one from both if you’re feeling ambitious). Use your chosen word(s) to craft your post. It doesn’t have to be Lovecraftian or even horror, but it should be dark, or unsettling, or scary, or Halloweenish in general.

As busy as I am, I just couldn’t turn this down. After-all, I am a horror writer, right? What helped make this easier was that in forgetting my memory stick at the cottage (it has ALL my writing on it), I had to dig up my back-up files on my computer. In doing so, I uncovered a bit I wrote a while ago based on an observation of a local house, by a good friend of mine. Her words? “I always see a faint light in the windows but never any tire tracks in the snow on the driveway.” Now you know how my mind works. Run away!

As always, at the end of this post is a list of the other participants. Take a moment to browse through their contributions as well. Remember, all bloggers love comments.

‘There’s No Place Like Home…’

No matter how much Alan shoveled, he made no headway. The snow laid waist deep about him, silent, glittering and unbudging.

With a sigh of defeat, he trudged back into the house. His current lot in life wasn’t what it was hyped up to be. “Greener pastures” his church minister had said. Ya right. The same drudgery, only now he had even less impact on it.

He slumped into his armchair in the Stygian darkness of his foetid living room, the picture window allowing only a few feeble rays of light to penetrate the grime coating its surface. He stared miserably down at the undisturbed dust on its arms, and sighed.

He returned his gaze out the window at the white shroud of death coating his lawn and watched as a pale Pontiac crept by, its tires whining at their lack of traction.

The world just kept right on spinning passed his door like he didn’t even exist.

He remembered when he had a purpose, when life held more promise than the dawning of the next day.

A familiar rattling gasp broke him from his self-pity, and he looked down at the source. Alan gazed at himself with morbid fascination. The broken, hunger decimated, form lay where it had for the last three months. How could he last so long? It was unnatural.

“ALAN!! Stop that horrid noise.” The harsh voice of his wife from the other room caused Alan to cringe and the eyes of his living corpse to slowly open.

Alan could feel it happening again, and as before, fought in vain against the pull. But like an elastic band stretched taunt and released, he snapped back into his body. He looked out through phlegm covered eyes, trying not to draw another breath, least he draw her undivided attention. He didn’t breathe again until her Cthulhuthian shadow faded from the doorway.

About Dale Long

Writing ambushed me from the shadows. At first I pushed it aside as nonsense, but luckily my wife and two girls saw the potential. Since then I have had an article published by Metroland, placed as runner-up and in the top ten in humour writing contests and various other contests. The icing on the cake was placing as runner-up in the WCDR's Wicked Words contest (130 entries) and having my entry published in the contests anthology of the same name. My entry was an exerpt from my upcoming novel, Echoes.

  1. Well done!

“He looked out through phlegm covered eyes, trying not to draw another breath,..”

Wow, I felt like I was looking out those same eyes and then I caught myself holding my breath! lol

Your use of the word Cthulhuthian makes me wonder what sort of voodoo has befallen the wife, if her husband is both undead and a ghost! Nice job.

  4. ralfast says:

And what the heck was he burying?

  5. John Hansen says:

O_o! Creepy… So creepy… What was he burying?!?

  6. Was he burying something? Your lead in has me thinking he was attempting to shovel snow in a driveway (and made no headway b/c he wasn’t connected to any body)? Very creepy. Nice job.

  8. Dale Long says:

John and Ral, Erin nailed it. He wasn’t burying anything, he was trying to shovel snow, but as a spirit/astra projection/out of body soul, he couldn’t. 😉 But now that you mention it…hmmm…

    Thanks!

  9. Diane Dooley says:

As sad and creepy as the story was, the most horrific part was the reminder of how much snow I’ll be shoveling this winter. Thanks, Dale. *grin*

This was creepy on a couple different levels! Nice & creative, well done. 🙂

  13. Dark and moody – it feels like Lovecraft met Kafka, or maybe the other way around.

    • Dale Long says:

I’m embarassed to say I had to look up Kafka. Thanks Diana!
I was playing with the idea that the MC craves release but his body just wouldn’t die. His wife kept him alive to torture him by denying him the afterlife.

  14. Oh Dale, this was just…just…wonderful!! All the little details, even the Pontiac whining by, just built up this dreary normalcy only to have you snap us out of that normalcy into a horror or most abnormal dimensions…just like Alan. Bravo!

    • Dale Long says:

Thanks Claire! Can grown manly type men blush? 😉 Aw shucks!

      • Well, better get used to it, sir. There are some people who just ooze talent AND are polished (top right quadrant), and you my friend are one of them. Others have the talent but are still working on the polish (bottom right), which is fine but another quadrant on the chart. No comment on the 2 left quadrants that we all, at one time or another, fear we fall into, especially the bottom left. (Sorry about the business analogy…that’s where my mind always goes)
